He catches up with you and says he's going to tie your friend's shoelaces to the swings unless you can do one thing: you have to shoot a basketball into a hoop from the opposite side of the court.

William Tell , a famous Swiss hero, is described as a farmer who was good with a bow and arrow. He found himself in a similar, but dangerous, situation when he met up with his own bully in a famous folktale.

This story happened hundreds of years ago, when what is now Switzerland was controlled by Austria. Gessler was the mean Austrian ruler of a town called Altdorf.

Gessler thought people should take off their own hat and bow to him to show respect for his power. He even expected people to bow to just a hat that was like his, even when he wasn't around.

So, he stuck a pole in the town square and put an Austrian style hat on it. One day, William Tell and his son walked through the square, but Tell didn't bow or take off his hat.

He was taken to Gessler, who said he and his son would be killed for being disrespectful unless he could do one thing.

He had to shoot an apple off his son's head from a long distance, using his bow and only one arrow. He took two arrows, aimed one, and shot the apple off his son's head.

Gessler said their lives were saved, but asked why Tell took two arrows. Tell said he was planning to shoot Gessler if the first arrow hurt his son.

This made Gessler really mad, so he tossed Tell on a boat and took him across a lake to a castle, where he would be thrown in the dark, musty dungeon forever.

During the trip, near a rocky ledge, a terrible wind whipped up. Tell was the only one strong enough to control the boat.

He got the boat close enough to the rocks, jumped out, and booted the boat with Gessler in it back out into the choppy water. Tell went up a long path and hid behind a tree, because he knew Gessler would search for him when he got off the boat.

When Gessler got close, Tell shot him with his second arrow. Gessler died. Later, Tell met up with others who didn't like Austria, and they agreed to fight together and burn down their castles.

People who study history have looked at town records where the story is set. Though the places are real and there are monuments built where the story takes place, no records for someone named William Tell have been found.

Whether he lived or not, Tell is still important to the Swiss people because he represents the beginning of their country, strength, and the fight to be free.

William Tell is a Swiss hero, a supposedly strong farmer who represents the beginning of Switzerland, though he may never have actually existed.

In the story, Tell didn't take off his hat and bow to the hat of an Austrian named Gessler , who ruled a town called Altdorf.

Because Tell didn't bow to an Austrian hat display, he was forced to shoot an apple off his son's head with a bow and arrow so they wouldn't be killed.

Later, he was thrown in a boat to be taken to a castle dungeon, but he escaped, killed Gessler, and fought with others against Austria. To unlock this lesson you must be a Study.
